What can you produce under pressure? This was the premise of the 3-day novel. A competition for would-be authors. The idea is simple - How many crazed plotlines, coffee-stained pages, pangs of doubt and moments of genius will you think up under pressure? The contest has ran every Labour Day Weekend since 1977. I was a contestant last year. It's a thrill, a grind, and an awesome creative experience.
Now for the business reference of this contest - would this kind of pressure when the stakes can be viewed as very high (one's livelihood getting affected, for example) move people to produce stellar work or buckle due to the pressure? when I took part in the contest, it wasn't just the pressure but the self-doubts that came with it; does happen at work too correct? I produced 250 pages and that was not good enough to make it to the short list. Are pressured individuals at work ready for being told that the work "was not good enough?" I did get to learn about myself and my capabilities; would it be the same at work?
Pressure has varied effects on people, positive or negative. It is awareness of managers that would assist in providing more pressure or pull back to ease workers from "buckling" and ending up terminating their employment. What steps do you take to ensure that whatever pressure (perceived or provided by you) that is present in the workplace is considered and controlled by you and your management staff?
