The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say "I." And that's not because they have trained themselves not to say "I." They don't think "I." They think "we"; they think "team." They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don't sidestep it, but "we" gets the credit. This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.
I used this quote in one of my leadership discussions because I can't believe some managers continue to take credit for work of their team without even batting an eyelash nor credit given to their team. I was in a meeting myself when a supposed "leader" indicated the work that she has done without indicating the amount of effort her people have expended to complete a project and she took all the credit in front of the very people who toiled to ensure the project is completed in time. It amazes me that it doesn't faze some of these managers at all. Is this being "thick skinned" or just plain ignorance of how to run a team? On the other hand, I just spoke with an operations manager this morning and she said "when you assist one of my people, you assist me so I thank you for your help" in reference to something I did for her analyst. So I guess there is hope. The need for constant reminding though is important so today I decided to post this quote for you to reflect and comment upon.
