It is very easy in the midst of problems to lose sight of longer-term goals. We concentrate on day-to-day survival and lose sight of our long view and future plans.
While that view is easy, it's also dangerous for the survival of your business. Survival is a perfectly good short-term goal, but to keep vision in your business you need to define reasons for that survival. That vision provides an energy and a purpose that mere survival cannot.
J.C. Penney once said: "Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I'll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I'll give you a stock clerk."
That statement has a profound truth to it. So, while you might be tempted to put your head down and hide in the current financial crisis, instead hold your chin high and look forward. Hold onto your dreams and plans, and make sure to share them in your company. If you only look down, you might find a penny on the ground but miss an open door of opportunity.
